Trojans Defeat Vikings for a 8-6 Record

ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Virginia State University Softball team, despite playing on the road, won both games against Elizabeth City State University Vikings on March 16.

The first game started slowly for both teams as neither could gain the upper hand.   At the top of the seventh inning with a score 0-0, VSU was able to get on the board due to a series of errors by the Lady Vikings positioning DeMone Brickhouse to score for the Trojans.  Going into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Trojans knew they had to hold the Vikings to win.  Pitcher Jessica Mattia sealed the game by striking out three batters and allowing one hit giving the Trojans the victory, 1-0.

Virginia State had a good start in game two.  It was the top of the first inning with Brickhouse and Verlisha Brandon on base, Endya Bailey comes to bat and gets a base hit and earned two RBI's giving the Trojans two points for a great start.  Marissa Hughes scored a run in the second inning to give the Trojans their third run of the game before the Vikings scored at the bottom of the second for a score of 3-1 going into the top of the third inning.

A strong run by the Trojans in the top of the fourth inning gave them a 7-1 lead. They continued their strong play with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Lady Vikings responded with a big run of their own scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the fifth closing the Trojans lead to three.

The game was called after the conclusion of the fifth inning due to rain, giving the Trojans another victory, 10-7.

The Trojans softball team   current record is 8-6 (overall) and 7-0(conference).  The next schedule game is non-conference against Howard University Bison for a double header on March 19 beginning at 4:00PM in Ettrick, Va.
