CIAA Softball Round Up Day 1

It was a great day one for the Virginia State University Softball team as they hosted the CIAA Softball Round Up. In game one, the Trojans went up against the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. Cameryn Smith started the the top of 2nd inning strong with a hit to outfield sending her to second base and ran it home with a good hit from Sade Holmes. Soon after an unexpected catch from the Broncos in the top of the 2nd gave the Trojans their 3rd out. Virginia State held steady keeping the Broncos down. At the beginning of the fourth the Trojans led 1-0. A hit by Janay Joseph to the back field sent Logan Tollison running home giving the Trojans 2-1. Jessica Mattia gave the Broncos' 1st batter 3 easy strikes at the bottom of the 4th inning. A forward roll and catch by Cameron Smith gave the Broncos their 2nd and soon after a 3rd out.

The Trojans had 2 quick outs at the top of the 6th inning until Mattia changed it up with a hit sending her to first base. Verlisha Brandon's hit sent her to first allowing Mattia to take second and steal 3rd. The Trojans would soon get their third out. Jamilia Smith came in focused getting a hit at the top of the 7th inning, sending her to first base, but was taken out while attempting to steal 2nd. Cameryn Smith hit the ball over the pitchers head sending her to 1st base. With bases loaded, Tollison came up to bat and struck out, followed by and out from Joseph. To start the bottom of the 7th the score was 3-0, Trojans leading. A ball hit to the back field by the Broncos gave them 2 run with a score of 3-2, the Trojans still leading. Pitcher Jessica Mattia struck out the Broncos in 7th inning for the 3-2 win.
 
In game two against the Shaw Bears, Virginia State, had a slow start trailing by 5-0 at the bottom of the third. The Trojans managed to hit the ball, but several attempted steals got the Trojans their 3 outs very fast in the first few innings. The top of the fourth the Trojans worked together to step up to the plate getting 7 runs in the inning. The Trojans tired out the Bears at the top of the 6th inning by loading the bases. Jamilia Smith went up to bat for a good hit to receive a run and an RBI. A slow start had a fast ending with a 14-5 win for the Trojans.
 
Virginia State currently has a 2-4 overall record and will take on the St. Augustine's Falcons at 1pm at the VSU Softball Field on day 2 of the CIAA Round Up.
