Trojans free throws help gain 60-56 victory over Falcons

RALEIGH, N.C.-  Virginia State University's top two scorers, sophomore guard Brandon Farmer (Ocala, Fl.) and junior guard Kahlil Tate (Washington D.C.) lead the Trojans to a 60-56 win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons at Emery Gymnasium on February 5.

Farmer finished the night with 11 points and one assist while Tate secured 10 points, one rebound, one assist and one steal.

The first half belonged to the Trojans as they held the lead.

Virginia State set the tone less than one minute into the game with a three pointer from Tate.

Several turnovers by the Falcons gave VSU the opportunity to lead the game by eight points before Saint Augustine's turned things around to come within two points of tying the game.  The Trojans went on another run to lead by eight (24-16) and the Falcons immediately took action to get back in the game.  Joel Kindred jumped up with a crowd pleasing dunk, but was shut down by Tate's three pointer.  The play gave life to the Trojans with two additional back to back shots from behind the arc from Farmer and Allen Harris.  At halftime Virginia State led, 35-29.

The second half, Saint Augustine's got off to a good start and maintain control until the Trojans tied the game 48-48 at the 8:41 mark.   The Falcons shot 39.3-percent from the field and held the Trojans to a 26.9-percent.  It was junior guard Lamar Kearse who went to the line to secure 9-of-10 free throws giving the Trojans what they need to get the upper hand over the Falcons to win 60-56.

The Trojans currently have a 12-9 overall record. They will take on Chowan University on February 12 in Daniel Gymnasium at 7:30pm.
