Virginia State Tops Chowan, 76-62

Murfreesboro, NC- Virginia State University's sophomore guard James Vann (Norfolk, VA) scored 12 of his 15 points and four of his seven rebounds in the second half and VSU snapped a two-game losing streak with a 76-62 win on Monday, February 17 over Chowan at the Helms Center. The Trojans have a 13-11 overall record with the win.

Junior guard Lamar Kearse (Syracuse, NY) contributed 13 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block while senior guard Christopher Grier (Stone Mountain, GA) added 13 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal for the Trojans.

Virginia State had control of the game for the entire night, starting with a 12-5 lead less than five minutes into the half. It was easy for the Trojans to keep their eye on the prize as the Hawks fouled them five times in the first half to retrieve 8 of 10 baskets.

The Trojans led by double-digits at the beginning of halftime, after a jumper from Kearse with 11 seconds on the clock.

The victorious momentum was carried over into the second half as Grier secured the first points of the half with his three-pointer.  His teammates followed suite to jump the Trojans to a 14 point win over the Hawks.

In the game, VSU shot 45.1 –percent from the field, 35.3 –percent from behind the arc and 77.4 –percent from the free throw line.

The Trojans outscored Chowan in the paint, 24-14, and added 24 points off of turnovers while collecting 15 second chance points.

The VSU men's basketball team will match up with the Bowie State University Bulldogs on Wednesday, February 19 in Bowie MD.  Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
