ELIZABETH CITY, NC –
James Vann (Norfolk, VA) scored nine points, including a shot from behind the arc for the last play of the night as the Virginia State University men's basketball team fell to Elizabeth City State University, 77-63, in the RL Vaughan Center on February 15.
Kevin Wiggins (Newport News, VA),
Lamar Kearse (Syracuse, NY) and
Kahlil Tate (Washington, DC) all secured eight points each. Wiggins compiled five rebounds while Kearse retrieved four defensive rebounds and two assists. Tate contributed two rebounds.
In the first half, Tate drove to the basket to give the Trojans their first points of the game. To stay on the Vikings trail, Chris Grier (Stone Mountain, GA) put up a three pointer at 16:17, bringing the score to 8-7. Wiggins was fouled by LaShawn Alexander of the Vikings, sending him to the line to sinking 1 of 2 baskets. The half continued to be a slow half for the Trojans. Despite the Vikings having more turnovers, the Trojans trailed at the halftime, 43-30.
Virginia State came into the second half outscoring the Elizabeth City State in the first five minutes, 10-6. Although the Trojans began the half with a strong start, the Vikings continued to add to the score board. As the clock ran down, Vann made an effort less than a minute left in the game, to add points to the Trojans books. He got them to the 60 point mark with a dunk followed by a final game play three pointer. The final score of the night was a loss for the Trojans, 77-63.
The Virginia State men's basketball team (12-11) will be playing Chowan (11-12) on Monday, February 17 in Murfreesboro, NC. Tip-off is at 7:30pm.
