Lincoln, PA. – Virginia State University men's basketball team lost to the Lion of Lincoln University this evening at the Manuel Rivero Hall Main Gymnasium 65-58.
The Trojans were looking to bounce back after a tough three point lost to Bowie State this pass Wednesday night in Ettrick. Leading scorer for the Trojans was Khalil Tate a junior from Washington, DC, scoring 15 points. Juniors
Lamar Kearse and
Larry Savage both scored 9 points, however it was not enough to secure a win against Lincoln. VSU couldn't come up with an answer for the Lions Derrick Washington who came off the beach, who nearly matched half his teams' point total by himself. Washington finished the game with 31 points (9-14 FG, 3-4 3PTRs, and 10-10 FT) while also adding three rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Virginia State shot 41.7-percent from the floor as a team and grabbed 16 defenses rebounds that helped them overcome a paltry first half in which they went into the break tied 29.
The Trojans returned from the half with the attitude to defeat the Lions. Within the first 40 seconds of the half Tate hit a three pointer to give the Trojans the lead and was able to hold on it for the first three minutes of play. At that point the Lions pulled away from the Trojans by much at six points before tying 51 with 7:03 remaining on the clock. Savage was fouled and went to the line making one giving the Trojans their last lead of the evening.
