PETERSBURG, VA- The Virginia State men's basketball team defeated the Elizabeth City State Vikings 70-59 during their "Sock it to the Vikings" game giving them their fourth straight win.
Kevin Wiggins, off the bench, dominated inside presence to lead the Trojans to a victory over the Vikings. Elizabeth City State (10-9) had nothing to stop the 6'6" junior. Wiggins put up monster numbers with 18 points to go along with his outstanding 12 rebounds. Wiggins was not the only Trojans who had a good game. Junior guard,
Lamar Kearse complimented the big man by putting up 16 points of his own. Virginia State (11-7) controlled the game by out numbering the Vikings by 12 rebounds and having 11 second chance points.
In the first half, the Trojans and Vikings were fairly matched with both shooting above 40 percent. The Trojans were able to secure a four point lead with 9:28 remaining on the clock. Elizabeth City State came back and tied the game before going into the locker room leading the Trojans 36-32.
The second half undoubtedly belonged to Virginia State. After taking a 41-40 led at the 17:00 mark, the Trojans put their foot on the gas pedal and never looked back. Elizabeth City State was outscored 38-23 in the second half, shooting a low 33 percent from the field. The Vikings went to the free throw line shooting 57 percent. Virginia State shot 50 percent from the floor and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. TheTrojans end the night with a 70-59 win.
The Trojans will face off against the Bulldogs of Bowie State on Wednesday, January 29 in Daniel Gymnasium at 7:30pm.
