Trojans Softball Runs Through Shaw and St. Aug’s at CIAA Round-Up

Virginia State improved to 4-1 overall in CIAA conference play with an 11-3 win over Shaw and a 10-5 win over St. Augustine's at the CIAA Round-Up in North Carolina hosted by Chowan University.

Jessica Mattia struck out 12 Lady Bears in an 11-3 win for the Trojans over Shaw in Ahoskie, NC on March 9th. Virginia State had nine hits led by Jameshia Smith's three hits. Verlisha Brandon knocked in a triple on her way to five RBIs sparking a Trojans six-run rally in the fourth inning. 

VSU's Jamilia Smith recorded two doubles against Shaw. The Trojans scored 11 runs on nine total hits. Jessica Mattia had a great outing with a season-high 12 strike outs. Virginia State scored one run in the third inning, six in the fourth inning, and four in the sixth inning.

In their next game of the day at the CIAA Round Up, the Trojans took on St. Augustine's on the campus of Chowan University. Endya Bailey led the Trojans with three hits while LaCara Hawkes and Jameshia Smith both had two hits each.  Eight runs were batted in as Alexandria King, Inez Hudson, and Endya Bailey all had two RBIs each.

Virginia State scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the fourth inning, four runs in the sixth, and two in the seventh inning for a 10-5 win over St. Augustine's. Scherrie Smith began the game for VSU at pitcher but Jessica Mattia was inserted after the first inning. Jessica Mattia struck out seven batters in six innings while allowing only three hits.
