Coppin State Defeats Trojans Softball in Double-Header Action

Endya Bailey scored one run in the earlier game then led the Trojans in game two with two hits against Coppin State on Sunday in Petersburg, VA. The Trojans lost game one 3-2 and also lost game two 12-0.

In game one, the Trojans hopped on top early in the second inning behind a single through the right side by infielder Caitlin Underhill. Endya Bailey scored on the RBI single by Underhill giving VSU a 1-0 lead. VSU pitcher Jessica Mattia did a good job against the Coppin State batters striking out five total batters. She walked four batters and allowed eight hits.

Coppin State finally scored in the sixth inning to tie the game.  The Trojans responded in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mikia Noble singled an RBI single to left field scoring Cameryn Smith. With a 2-1 lead, VSU went into the final inning confident and ready to close out the game.

But Coppin State went on to score two runs in the final inning on a single to left field scoring two runners. The Trojans were unable to answer the rally by Coppin State and lost 3-2. Five Trojans recorded hits in game one.

In game two, Coppin State dominated the Trojans 12-0. Inez Hudson began the game for VSU pitching six innings. Hudson struck out three batters and allowed five hits. Relief pitcher Scherrie Smith went two innings allowing seven hits to the Coppin State offense.

Endya Bailey led the Trojans with a double base hit. Inez Hudson, Alexandra King, and LaCara Hawkes all had hits for VSU in game two.
