Grier & Bynum Pace Trojans in 61-58 Loss to St. Aug’s

Box Score Two Trojans carried the offense combining for 35 points in a three point loss (61-58) to Saint Augustine's University on Thursday, January 13th in Petersburg, VA. Christopher Grier scored a game-high 18 points while Mike Bynum added 17 points against the Falcons.

It was an evenly matched game between the Falcons and the Trojans in the opening game of CIAA conference play for both teams. Christopher Grier scored 13 points in the first half pacing the Trojans offense. VSU shot 48% from the field while St. Aug's shot 36% in the first half. Allen Harris had five rebounds with four points in the first half and Mike Bynum hit two shots from three-point land scoring six points. St. Aug's led the Trojans 31-30 at the half.

The score was tied nine times and the lead changed 11 times in this close battle between the Falcons and Trojans. The Falcons offense improved in the second half shooting 42% from the field while the Trojans offense disappeared behind 30% shooting. Mike Bynum led the Trojans attack in the second half with 11 points and hit two more shots from three-point range. VSU forced nine turnovers in the second half and made 9-14 shots from the free-throw line, but could not come up with the lead in the final seconds of the game. Several missed shots in the final minute for the Trojans allowed St. Aug's to walk away with a 61-58 win.

Christopher Grier tied his career-high of 18 points against the Falcons. Mike Bynum added 17 points and Shawn Porter pitched in with seven points.

VSU (5-5, 0-1) will host Fayetteville State in their next game at home on Saturday, January 5th at 5:30 p.m.
