Allen Harris Lifts Trojans Past Chowan, 73-65

Allen Harris scored a game-high 23 points as the Trojans clipped the Hawks of Chowan University 73-65 on Wednesday, January 23rd in Daniel Gymnasium. The Trojans improve to 4-4 in conference play and expand their win streak to two games.

VSU stole the momentum by scoring three consecutive baskets after trailing 7-5 early in the first half. The run was sparked by VSU's James Vann. Vann knocked down a three from the left corner giving VSU the lead. Mike Bynum and Allen Harris both paced the Trojan's scoring explosion.  Bynum nailed a three and knocked down some free throws following a thunderous slam dunk in transition by Allen Harris. Bynum scored five of his 10 points in the first half. Harris finished the first half leading his team with 11 points. The Trojans maintained the lead for the rest of the first half thanks to some consistent scoring and fouls shots. VSU went into the locker room with a 33-29 advantage over Chowan. The Trojans shot a little under 40% from the field, 50% from three point land and 90% (9-10) from the foul line after the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, Allen Harris knocked down a jumper early expanding the Trojans lead. Allen Harris finished with a game-high 23 points after scoring 11 in the first half. The Trojans lead continued to expand as the game progressed. Virginia State led by as much as 15 points  with 12:24 left in the game.

Kenny Mitchell aided the Trojans with some key baskets in the paint and also from the perimeter. Mitchell finished with 13 points while Mike Bynum had 14 points with four assists. The Trojans held on to a double digit lead for a majority of the second. VSU played tight defense and scored consistently shooting 56% field, 60% from three, and 84% from the free-throw line in the second half as the Trojans pick up the victory with a 73-65 victory over Chowan.

The Trojans improve to 9-8 overall amd an even 4-4 in CIAA conference play. VSU travels to Elizabeth City, NC on Saturday, January 26th to face the Vikings at 5:00 pm.
