Mike Bynum (junior/ Norfolk, VA) went a perfect 4 for 4 from downtown dropping 18 points to lead the Trojans to victory over the Lions of Lincoln University on Monday, Feb. 20 in Ettrick, VA. The Trojans shot 51% from the field and outscored Lincoln's bench 30-10 winning their fifth consecutive game.
The Trojans jumped on their northern divisional rivals early, building a quick nine point lead in the first five minutes of the ball game. VSU's Ibn Rassoull (senior/ East Orange, NJ) and Mike Bynum made some early three-points baskets providing some breathing room for the Trojans. In the first half the Trojans shot lights out from three-point land connecting on 6 of 13 for the half. Virginia State built a solid lead over Lincoln and went into the half ahead, 30-21.
Offensively, the Trojans continued their hot shooting from the field. They extended their lead to double-digits by finding open shooters as they finished the night with 19 assists.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Kenny Mitchell (junior/Stone Mountain, GA) woke up in the second half and added 12 points. Leading the way for the Trojans bench was Daniel Awosanya (London, England) with 13 points and 6 boards.
Guard Mike Bynum was a sharp shooter tonight for the Trojans, as he led all scorers with a game-high 18 points. Every time he came open from behind the three-point arc he nailed the shot. Bynum shot a remarkable 60 % from the field.
"We played a great game tonight. The guys are buying in and playing great defensively. After Saturday's game, it's now CIAA time and then it's one and done. We just need to keep on winning we got some momentum going on heading towards the tournament, so hopefully we can keep this streak going," comments Trojan head basketball coach, Darryl Jacobs.
Three Trojan seniors played their final home game in Daniel Gymnasium; Justine Bess (senior/ Landover, MD), Ibn Rassoull (senior/ East Orange, NJ), and James Shambley (senior/ Norfolk, VA).
The Trojans will end their regular season on Feb. 25 in Murfreesboro, NC against Chowan.
