Kenny Mitchell (junior/ Stone Mountain, GA) scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in a 78-75 win for the Trojans against Elizabeth City State on Monday, Feb. 13 in Ettrick, VA. Virginia State shot a season best 58% from the field with three Trojans scoring in double-figures.
The Trojans shot 64% from the field in the opening half against the Vikings. Two Trojans, Kenny Mitchell and Daniel Awosanya (junior/ London, England) both scored 12 first half points dominating the paint for Virginia State. With 3:39 in the half, Kevin Wiggins (sophomore/ Newport News, VA) put the Trojans ahead by 11 points after a steal on defense and a transition layup on offense.
Guards Mike Bynum (junior/ Norfolk, VA) and Ibn Rassoull (senior/ East orange, NJ) hit treys from long range in the first half pacing the Trojans from behind the ark. The Vikings trailed the Trojans 45-38 at the half.
The Trojans came out the locker room ready to finish what they started in the first half. Awosanya hit the glass for his team in the second half snagging 8 rebounds. Virginia State continued to score on offense as Mitchell finished with a career-high 28 points. He went a perfect 10 for 10 from the field and also made 8 of 13 shots at the free-throw line. Awosanya added 14 points of his own and Bynum pitched in scoring 12 points.
Virginia State won their sixth game at home this season defeating the Vikings of Elizabeth City State (78-75). The Trojans improve to 6-17 overall, 5-7 in the conference, and 2-5 in the northern division. VSU will travel to Bowie State on Saturday, Feb. 18 and play the Bulldogs on national television.
