Trojans Fall To Gannon in Porreco Cup Tournament Championship Game, 67-42

VSU's Mike Bynum was named to the All-Tournament team, but the Trojans fell to Gannon 67-42 in the championship game of the 39th Annual Porreco Cup Tournament in Erie, PA on Dec. 15th. Kenny Mitchell led the Trojans with 10 points while Allen Harris added 8 points in a tough road loss for VSU.
 
Virginia State's offense had a difficult time scoring in the first half as the Trojans shot 20% from the field. The Trojans deficit grew to 23 points as Gannon shot 42% and knocked down six three-pointers. VSU never had the lead and recorded nine first half turnovers. Alex Jackson led the Trojans grabbing four rebounds with three points in the first half. Virginia State trailed Gannon 34-13 going into the half.
 
Kenny Mitchell added instant offense early in the second half for VSU with three quick layups. But Gannon held on to a double-digit lead and continued to add on. The Trojans found themselves trailing (48-21) their largest deficit of the game with 14:05 left in the game. VSU managed to outscore Gannon inside the paint 18-16, but defensively allowed 43% shooting from the field. Kenny Mitchell scored eight of his ten points in the second half as Gannon defeated VSU 67-42 in the championship game of the Porreco Cup Tournament.

Alex Jackson recorded a career-high six rebounds for the Trojans while Mike Bynum had five points and was named to the Porreco Cup All-Tournament team.

VSU falls to 4-4 overall and will host St. Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 29th in their final game before starting CIAA conference play.
