Volleyball prepares for last non-conference tournament

Ettrick, Va (Sept. 19, 2024)- The Virginia State University volleyball team will travel to Concord University to play in the Concord Classic where they will play three teams from the Mountain East Conference (MEC). 

The host Concord will be the first opponent on Friday September 20 at 5 p.m. The Mountain Lions enter their classic with a record of 1-8 and coming off a loss to Lees-McRae. CU also played fellow CIAA team Shaw and went to five sets but dropped the match 3-2.  Meg Williams leads the Mountain Lions with 102 points and 91 kills. Paige Richmond dished out 163 assists while Allie Davis recorded 136 digs. Concord was picked to finish third in the MEC South Division. 

Davis and Elkins enter the classic 0-3 after playing in the Clarion Tournament. Reanne DeBose leads the Senators with 20 points and 19 kills. Both Haylie Marumoto and Kiera Robinson both recorded 21 assists and Clara Caralt has 20 digs. The Senators were picked last in the MEC Southern Division.  

West Virginia Wesleyan enters the classic with the best record of the teams VSU plays at 7-2. The Bobcats are coming off a 4-0 record at the Big Blue Classic. Bhrooke Axe is one of three players with 75 or more kills as she has 98, Emily Denison has 88 and Olivia Albrecht has 76. Jalynn West has already dished out 345 assists, which is second in the Mountain East. The Bobcats were selected to finish fifth in the MEC Southern Division. VSU plays both the Senators and Bobcats on Saturday September 21 at 12 and 4 respectfully.  

The Trojans enter the classic with a 1-2 record after playing in the Barry Invitational. Gracie Darville leads the team with 26 kills followed by Helena Eubanks with 19. Peyton Reese recorded 46 assists in the three games. Fans can follow along with all the action with live stream and live stats.
