Kara Green, Skye Corum and Kyla Graves Earn All-CIAA Honors

ETTRICK, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its 2023 Softball All-Conference and All-Rookie teams Tuesday afternoon as voted by the CIAA Softball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association. Virginia State softball was represented by pitcher Kara Green Second-Team All-Conference, Skye Corum and Kyla Graves All-Rookie team.

In conference play, Green started five games and appeared in eight. In her junior season she led the Trojans with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. She had three wins and two losses against CIAA opponents, recording 22 strikeouts in 33.1 innings pitched. Green is credited with Virginia State's only shutout of the year, striking out six through seven innings in a 4-0 victory against Lincoln University. She also recorded a five-inning shutout of Virginia Union, which featured a season-high eight strikeouts.

Corum, a third baseman, batted .267 and had an on-base percentage of .405 against conference foes. The freshman finished the regular season with eight hits, eight runs scored, six walks, and six RBIs in 30 at-bats. Corum also went 3-1 in the pitcher's circle against CIAA opponents with a 5.18 ERA.

Graves only appeared in 14 games total and five conference contests, but she was a game changer for the Trojans in limited action. The Greensboro, NC native has a .333 batting average with 11 hits, 11 runs, and a team-high three homeruns. She was even better against the CIAA, earning a .417 batting average and a 1.333 OPS after earning five hits and scoring six runs in 12 at-bats.

The Trojans wrapped up the regular season with an 11-17 overall record. After a 10-6 record in conference play and a 7-3 mark against division opponents, Virginia State secured a top conference seeding at the No.4 spot, earning the Trojans home field advantage against Fayetteville State for the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 2 at 3:00 p.m.

The semifinals and championship rounds of the CIAA's double-elimination tournament will be held at RF&P Park in Glen Allen, VA. The semifinals are slated for Friday, May 5 and the championship will be played Saturday, May 6.
