VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The VSU Men's Indoor Track and Field prepares to open the 2023 season in the VCU Indoor Invitational under the tutelage of Head Coach Track & Field and Cross-Country Coach Frank Hyland. Though the meet will take place in Virginia Beach, VA, Virginia Commonwealth University will be the official hosts of the meet.
The Men's Indoor Track and Field team will look to defend their conference championship after taking home the Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship in 2022.

The Virginia State men's indoor track and field team were named the outright champions of the CIAA after dethroning St. Augustine's, who won the CIAA conference championship every year since the 1997-1998 season.
Jalen Brownlee posted three personal best along with three first place finishes while being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Meet on the men's side.Â
Emmanuel Oguntoye claimed his first CIAA Indoor Track and Field title in the triple jump after being disqualified in 2020. In his first ever CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship experience,
Atrell Williams placed first in the shot put. Joshua Butler proved to be the most well-rounded athlete at the meet as the freshman was able go home a conference champion in the Heptathlon. Virginia State became just the third team in CIAA history to win the Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship outright.

Top Returners (Sprinters)
- Jaelan Black posted a personal best 7.02 in the 60-meter dash in the Vince Brown Invitational. His personal best came in the CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship when he placed second in the 200-meter finals behind a time of 22.33.
- Joel Bowers will be returning for his senior season after finishing fourth in the 400-meter finals in the CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. His personal best in the 400-meter dash came in the Liberty Open after posting a 50.46. Additionally, Bowers finished the 200-meter dash in 23.40 in the Vince Brown Invitational.Â

Top Returners (Distance)
- Reigning CIAA Indoor Track and Field MVP, Jalen Brownlee, is back for his Sophomore season. Brownlee had quite a day in the CIAA Indoor Championship a year ago finishing first in the 800, first the mile run with a personal best 4:30.94, first in the 5,000, second in the 4x400 and first in the distance medley relay. His best event was the 800 as he finished no less than second in three of four indoor meets. Â

Top Returners (Jumpers)
- Shaukeeme Mitchel-Watson finished in first place in the high jump behind his personal best 1.90-meter jump in the KMS Opener. He went on to earn a personal best in the long jump behind his 6.61-meter leap in the CIAA Indoor Championships. He also finished third in the High Jump in the conference championship as well.

- As a freshman, Atrell Williams took home the gold medal in the CIAA Indoor Championship shot put throw. He finished first in three of four indoor meets as his best throw of 15.55 meters came in the second career meet in the Vince Brown Invitational.
- Veteran thrower Isaiah Ramadane prepares for his Junior season after helping his team win the CIAA Indoor Championship a season ago after placing fourth in the shot  put posting a season-high 13.93-meter throw.
- Devonte Moore will look to expand his role this season after competing in just one meet a season ago. In his lone meet, he placed second in the KMS Opener after his 13.39-meter toss.
