The VSU women's basketball team is seeking their first win of the 2021-2022 regular season heading into the VSU Thanksgiving Classic, the Trojans will welcome Shaw University, Alderson Broaddus University and Penn State Greater Allegheny University to the VSU Multipurpose center. This weekend's slate of games goes as follows:
 
Friday-Shaw vs. Alderson Broaddus @ 5 p.m.
Friday-Virginia State vs. Penn State Greater Allegheny @ 7 p.m.
Saturday-Shaw vs. Penn State Greater Allegheny @ 1 p.m.
Saturday-Virginia State vs. Alderson Broaddus @ 3 p.m.
 

Last Time Out
  • Virginia State forced 24 turnovers as 17 of them came in the first half.

Scouting the Nittany Lions
The Nittany Lions of Penn State Greater Allegheny enter VSU Thanksgiving Classic on a two-game winning streak beating their last two opponents by nearly 30 points in the last two matchups. Offensively, PSU-GA averages 65 points per game while averaging 23 three-point attempts per game. The Nittany Lions attempted nearly 30 three's in their last two games while attempting 34 against Point Park on Nov. 8. Defensively, the squad allows 70 points per game while grabbing 34 rebounds per contest. PSU-GA averages 11 steals per game as the team has accounted for double-digit steals in 4-of-8 games. Tomisha Pierce is the team-leader in points averaging 15 per game while shooting 51% from the field. Isabella Vazquez leads her squad in the rebounding category averaging nine per contest while averaging 12 points per game as well. Vazquez's best game this season came against Penn State Wilkes-Barre as she scored 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, 4-of-6 from three and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The Nittany Lions have a young squad as seven of the teams 13 players are freshman.
 
Scouting the Battlers
The Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University are a part of the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The Battlers enter the VSU Thanksgiving Classic fresh off a 98-94 overtime win against Wheeling. Offensively, ABU averages 98 points per game while shooting 46% on the season. ABU attempts 25 free throws per game while knocking down 70% of them. ABU averages 26 turnovers per game, which allows opponents to score 26 points off turnovers. The Battlers opened their season with a season-high 110 points in a losing effort. Defensively, ABU gives up 107 points per contest yet, average 45 rebounds per game, which allows them to be plus eight in the rebounding category. The ABU defense has also accounted for 13 blocks and 24 steals in just three games thus far. The Battlers have four players in Iyahnna Williams (22), Hannah Taylor (19), Ariyah Douglas (11) and Taylor Issac (11) who average double-digits on the season. Iyahnna Williams leads her team in scoring and rebounding averaging 22 points and seven rebounds per game. She set her season-high the first game of the season accounting for 36 points in 36 minutes on 14-of-19 shooting from the field along with seven rebounds and three assists. Williams scores her points from the charity stripe and in the painted area as she shoots 61% from the field without attempting a single three-pointer on the season. Her partner-in-crime, Hannah Taylor averages 19 points per game on a 53% field goal percentage on the season. The Battlers have a young squad as nine of the teams 13 players are freshman. The Trojans won the last two matchups by 20 or more points
