BALTIMORE, MD --The Virginia State women's basketball team got a 22-point showing from the bench, but fell 56-42 to the Claflin Panthers at CFG Bank Arena Thursday.
Michaela Lane led the Trojans (17-8) with nine points, nine rebounds and four steals. Shayla Wyatt also added eight points and two steals and Skylar White chipped in as well with two points and five steals off the bench.
Virginia State out-rebounded Claflin 30-25 in Thursday's game, paced by Lane's nine boards. The Trojans also grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and scored four second chance points.
Virginia State forced 23 Claflin turnovers. The Trojans turned those takeaways into 13 points on the other end of the floor. White's five steals led the way for Virginia State.

Claflin kept adding to that lead, building a 23-14 advantage before Virginia State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Lane, to narrow its deficit to 23-19. Claflin responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Trojans trailing 27-19 heading into halftime.
Virginia State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Trojans faced a 39-27 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its eight points in the paint.
Claflin kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 47-34 advantage before Virginia State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Maya Ellis' three, to shrink the deficit to 47-39 with 2:41 to go in the contest. Claflin responded and outscored the Trojans the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 56-42. Virginia State took advantage of nine Claflin turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of those takeaways.
