Spearman, Lane combine to score 37, Virginia State falls to Bowie State 73-57

BOWIE, MD --Kendahl Spearman and Michaela Lane combined to score 37 total points - 64.9 percent of Virginia State's points - but the Trojans fell to the Bowie State Bulldogs 73-57 on the road Wednesday.

Spearman led the Trojans (17-6, 11-4) with 29 points and nine rebounds. Lane tacked on eight points, six rebounds and four blocks from the bench and Shayla Wyatt helped out with six points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

Virginia State pulled down 40 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Bowie State's 36, led by Wyatt's 10 boards. The Trojans also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 11 rebounds into 13 second chance points.

The Virginia State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 15 Bowie State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Wyatt's two steals led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

Virginia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Virginia State then cut the Bulldogs lead to 22-13 before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Alexis Blake, to narrow its deficit to 22-19. Bowie State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Trojans trailing 33-24 heading into halftime.

Virginia State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Trojans faced a 56-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.

Virginia State narrowed its deficit to 62-45 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Spearman's layup, to shrink the deficit to 62-50 with 4:38 to go in the contest. Bowie State responded and outscored the Trojans the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-57. Virginia State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 13 of its 19 total points.
