Box Score ETTRICK, VA (October 16, 2021)- The Virginia State University volleyball team snapped a six-game winning streak on the road at Shaw University on Thursday night.

Set 1
After a back-and-forth start, the Bears went on a 4-0 run to make the score 8-4. Midway the first set,
Helena Eubanks came up with two back-to-back kills to make the score 11-10. Shaw then went on to score seven unanswered points to bring the score to 18-10. The Shaw and Virginia State traded points until Shaw eventually pulled away at the end of the set 25-15.

Set 2
After an early lead for the Bears, the Trojans battled back to tie the second set at five all. VSU held a slim lead briefly before the Bears score four straight points to stretch the lead out to 11-8. The Trojans were able to string together consecutive points to take the lead 15-14. The Bears would then capitalize off the mistakes of VSU, as they were able to take the lead 21-16. Virginia State found life at the end of the set scoring three unanswered points with the Bears already at 24. VSU was able t give themselves a chance before SU scored the final point of the set to make it 25-21

Set 3
Both teams traded points to start the final set until Shaw was able the put together three straight points to go ahead 6-3. Midway through the second set, the Trojans were able to keep up with the Bears until the home squad scored four of five points to extend their lead to 10-5. The Bears would go on to extend their lead to 18-10 after two additional scoring runs. SU gained their way to a 10-point deficit prior to a late charge by the Trojans to make the final score 25-17.

Leaders
Helena Eubanks led the charge for the Trojans with seven kills while
Jodorrian Taylor added five. Taylor also accounted for a match-high four blocks on the evening.
Makenzy Johnson assisted on 12 kills while
Emma Quarles had seven.
Najlaa Williams led the match with 14 digs while
Alexis Baker and
Kennedy Hoge combined for six digs.

 Next Up
The Trojans are set to take on the Broncos of Fayetteville State University at 6:00 p.m. October 28. Both squads are tied for second place in the Northern Division of the CIAA. The matchup will be at the home of the Broncos, as the Trojans will look to get back on track after the road loss.
