VSU Men's 4x100 Finishes 1st at Penn Relays

Trojans Make Program History

PHILADELPHIA, PA- The Virginia State University men's and women outdoor track and field teams, continue to make program history during their 2019 campaign.

At the historic Penn Relays on April 25-27, the VSU men's outdoor track and field team made history of their own by winning the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.59. The quartet of Ed'Treon Wilcox, Allen Blair Steven Murdock and Igo Grimes have been consistent on the track through the season. Regionally, the group are ranked 2nd in the 4x100 event.

The Wilcox, Blair, Murdock and Grimes also crossed the finish line with a 4x200 time of 1:25.38. They not only finished 7th among the 32 teams in the relay, but their time is the second best this season.

This is the first season the quartet has competed together and their results are unmatched! Although ranked individually in their respective events, the talent of the four together has contributed to the development of a championship team. The leadership and drive of senior Steven Murdock to the fresh talent of freshman Igo Grimes balances the group.

While the men took charge of track, the women dominated the field events.

With a 9-way tie for 3rd place in the women's high jump, Jade Jordan leaped with a mark of 1.59m. Jordan is currently ranked 1st in the region in the women's high jump and tied for 2nd nationally.

Facing several top ranked teams in the women's long jump, Christina Adlam took a 13th place leap with a measure of 5.50m. In the region, Adlam is currently ranked 9th in her respective event.

Top ranked throws student-athlete Jeia Gilliam, threw for a 13th place shot put measure of 13.96m and an 8th place DII discus provisional measure of 47.87m. Regionally, Gilliam is ranked 2nd in the women's shot put and 1st in the discus throw, automatically qualifying her nationally with a 3rd place ranking.

"We feel very good going into next week," said Coach Johnson. "We are going for the gusto, in hopes of winning the championship on both sides."

The Trojans have made an impact on the season and at Penn Relays as they set their sights on the 2019 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on May 4-5 in Bowie, MD.
