Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Virginia State University Volleyball team split the CIAA Roundup weekend with a 2-2 record on October 19-20. The Trojans opened the roundup with back-to-back sweeps against Livingstone College and Claflin University on October 19. On October 20, VSU fell short with a close 3-2 loss to Fayetteville State University and a 3-1 loss to the host Winston-Salem State University.
The roundup moves the Trojans to an 11-9 overall record, 8-3 in the conference.
Game 1- Livingstone
The Trojans kept the Blue Bears under 20 points in set 1 and set 3, with a win of 25-12 and 25-17 respectively. Set 2 was close in scoring as the Blue Bears attempted to take the win, but VSU jumped ahead to take the 25-21 set victory.
Ambria McBride (12) and
Jodorrian Taylor (11) secured double-digit kills in the Trojans victory over Livingstone. Keeping VSU's plays alive was
Bria Anderson with 23 assists.
VSU led in all comparison categories to include points (51-32), kills (39-25), aces (6-5), blocks (6-2), assists (32-22) and digs (34-22).
Game 2- Claflin
VSU ended day 1 of the CIAA Roundup with a 3-0 sweep over Claflin.
Mimicking their first game of the day against Livingstone, the Trojans held the CU Panthers under 20 points in set 1 and set 3, with a win of 25-16 and 25-19 respectively.
The Trojans had a tough battle during set 2 with the Panthers rallying back during the final points of the set, tying the score 24-all. McBride closed the out the set for the Trojans with consecutive kills to give VSU a 26-24 set win.
Jailyn Ivey grasped a game high of 17 kills, followed by
Ambria McBride with 15 kills.
Bria Anderson returned to the court in the Trojans 2
nd game of the day with to secure 41 assists.
Despite Claflin having a slight edge in blocks (4-3), VSU led in all of the other comparison categories to include points (61-35.5), kills (50-27), aces (8-4), assists (47-25) and digs (42-34).
Game 3- Fayetteville State
VSU opened day 2 with an intense matchup against the Broncos of Fayetteville State. The Trojans battled in sets 1 and 2, but fell short of a win (25-17, 25-19). The Trojans rallied back in sets 3 and 4 to secure the respective 27-25 and 25-21 set win.
Although the Broncos kept the scoring gap close in set 3, the Trojans stayed in control of the game for a 27-25 win. Despite FSU taking an early lead in set 4,
Jailyn Ivey kept VSU in the game to regain the lead. The Trojans remained consistent, to earn the 25-21 set victory.
VSU attempted to bounce back in the final plays, but the deciding set ultimately ruled in favor of FSU win a score of 15-9.
Dominating the court with 25 kills was
Jailyn Ivey, followed by VSU's
Jodorrian Taylor with the games 3
rd overall highest number of kills with 14.
Bria Anderson remained consistent for the Trojans with 46 assists.
Despite the Broncos having an edge in blocks (13-7), VSU led in all of the other comparison categories to include points (77-76), kills (60-60), aces (10-3), assists (57-55) and digs (68-67).
Game 4- Winston Salem State
The Trojans battled hard in their matchup against WSSU, despite fall 3-1.
Although they trailed in set 1 with a score of 25-22, VSU rallied back in set 2 by holding the lead to take the 25-22 win. Set 3 saw several error from the Trojans allowing the Rams to take the 28-26 win, before VSU fell in set 4 with a final score of 25-22.
Jailyn Ivey left her mark on the roundup for a 3
rd game in a row for the Trojans, with a game high of 16 kills.
Ambria McBride and
Jodorrian Taylor were not too far behind with 14 and 13 kills respectively. Bria kept the plays alive for VSU with 29 assists.
Despite the Rams having an edge in blocks (11-2), VSU led in all of the other comparison categories to include points (69-60), kills (58-40), aces (9-9), assists (54-36) and digs (40-29).
Up Next
The Trojans will travel to Richmond, VA to take in the Panthers of Virginia Union University on October 23. The first serve is set for 6pm.
As the season progresses, the Trojans have their sights set on the 2019 CIAA Championships in Salem, VA on November 21 and 23.
