VSU Softball Sweeps the CIAA Roundup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, NC (March 18, 2018)- The Virginia State University softball team opened their 2018 conference play by sweeping the 2018 CIAA Roundup on March 16-18 with a 6-0 record. At the roundup, hosted by Elizabeth City State University, the Trojans took down Shaw University and Winston-Salem State University on day 1 and down Johnson C. Smith University and Fayetteville State University on day 2. VSU complete the final day with a victory over Livingstone College (13-0) and St. Augustine's University (8-0).

GAME 1 v. LC
The Trojans entered the final day of the CIAA Roundup ready to play! After a quick three strikes on the Blue Bears, VSU ousted their competition. Securing 11 runs at the bottom of the first inning, a few Trojans crossed home plate twice in the inning.
 
The momentum of the first inning allowed the Trojans to collect 2 additional runs to take the 13-0 win over Livingstone after 5 innings.
 
GAME 2 v. SAU
After a scoreless first inning and holding the St. Augustine's Falcons offense down at the top of the second inning, VSU brought home seven runners at the bottom of 2 innings. Tatyana Jordan, Kennedy Presson, India Holmes, Amirah Chaney, Samantha Cunningham, Ayannah Bowman and Laricesa Miles each crossed home plate.
The third and fourth innings breezed by as both teams endured quick strikeouts. An additional run by Dominique Mulero at the bottom of the 5th inning, would seal the Trojans 8-0 victory over the Falcons.

THE WEEKEND
The Trojans hold their largest winning streak of the season with 6 victories after their CIAA conference play opening weekend. The tough competition VSU took on during the Shaw Tournament on March 9-10 prepared them for the roundup and the remainder of the season.


A COACHES VIEW
"The team rocked the weekend for sure," said head coach Lynne Gilbert. "They made a statement with their plays and the way that they handled themselves. They had exceptional character no matter the atmosphere."
 

UP NEXT
The Trojans will take on Southside Virginia Community College at 5pm on March 21 for a single matchup. The contest will be played at the Civic Field in Colonial Heights, VA.
