Charlotte, N.C. (February 27, 2018) – The Virginia State University men's basketball team (23-3, 13-3 CIAA, 9-1 Northern Division) will open its 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament play in the quarter finals round where they will face the Falcons of St. Augustine's on Wednesday, February 28. Tipoff is set for 6:40 p.m. at the Bojangles' Coliseum. The Falcons enter the contest as the No. 4 seed in the Southern Division. SAU defeated Chowan University 75-55 in the opening round to advance.
The Trojans finished the regular season with an impressive 23-3 overall record, 13-3 CIAA, and 9-1 in the Northern Division claiming the CIAA Northern Division Title. Taking a leadership role on the court is senior Trey Brown. He currently averages 10.3 pointer per game. So far this season, Brown secured a single game high of 25 points over Virginia Union University on January 14. Head Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. also added a few key student-athletes to the roster to give the team more depth. Taking charge of the Trojans rebounds is Andrew Corum, averaging six recoveries per game. In VSU's conference matchup against Livingstone College on January 6, Corum secured a current season single game high of 13 rebounds.
Alongside the duo, the Trojans look to senior Richard Granberry, senior Waymond Wright, junior Walter Williams, junior Cyonte Melvin and junior Philip Owens to make key plays.
The last time the two teams met was on December 14 where the Falcons secured a 73-66 victory over the Trojans at Emery Gymnasium. Virginia State finished with shooting 32.8 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from the three point line and 57.7 percent from the free throw line. Philip Owens led the way for the Trojans finishing the contest with 17 points and two assists.
