Men’s Basketball Secured a 75-65 Victory Over Bowie State University

Bowie, Md. (February 21, 2018) – The nationally ranked Virginia State University men's basketball team secured a 75-65 victory over the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (BSU) tonight at S.C. Jordan Arena tonight.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Philip Owens led the Trojans with 16 points and two assists on the evening. Cyonte Melvin was VSU's second leading scorer, ending the contest with 13 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Walter Williams chipped in with 12 points, followed by William Vedder with 11 points. Waymond Wright and Andrew Corum chipped in with six points each.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half:

Bowie State started the contest with adding two free throws to take a 2-0 lead. Waymond Wright scored the first basket of the contest for the Trojans at the 16:10 mark to tie the game two all. The Bulldogs then secured a 4-2 lead on a jumper by Omari George at the 15:51 mark. The Trojans then answered with a layup by Richard Granberry to tie the contest for the second time with 15:38 left in the first half. VSU then took a 13-4 lead at the 13:11 mark following back-to-back three pointers by Philip Owens. The Trojans then jumped out to a 24-18 lead with 6:29 left in the first half. A jumper by Dayshawn Wells put the Bulldogs within three of the Trojans with 5:36 on the clock. Three back-to-back baskets by the Trojans edged the score 30-21 at the 3:36 mark. The Trojans secured a three-pointer by Walter William with 0:02 left to take a 35-21 advantage to close out the half.

 

Second Half:

Virginia State started the second half scoring the first basket and adding one from the free throw line with18:14 left in the contest. Back-to-back three-pointers by the Trojans grew its lead 49-33 with 10:33 left on the clock. VSU then secured another back-to-back three-pointers, advancing its lead 64-49 at the 3:48 mark. The Bulldogs when added 11 points over the next two minutes to make the score 72-61. The Trojans ended the game adding its final baskets from the free throw line taking the victory, 75-65.

 

Virginia State ended the contest shooting 48 percent from the field (24-of-50), knocking down 9-of-20 three pointers (45 percent) and shooting 66 perfect from the free throw line (18-27).


UP NEXT

VSU will host the Lions of Lincoln University in its final home game of the 2018 regular season on Saturday, February 24 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.  Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
