ETTRICK, VA (September 25, 2017) - The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team gave the Panthers of Virginia Union University a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 26-24) upset on Monday night.

Leading the Trojans on the court was junior Myia Jones with 14 kills while junior Hailey Heyward was not too far behind with 12 kills. Senior Miranda Bass was in place to tally 27 assists for the Trojans.

Set one was a breeze for VSU as they snatched a 25-12 win. Collecting points off of numerous kills and errors, the Trojans quickly took a 17-9 lead. With no rally in sight, VSU used the additional Panther errors to secure the set.

Despite the Panthers attempt to step their game up, the Trojans worked the court to grasp the 25-20 set two victory.

Battling back, VUU put up a fight to take set three. VSU took an early 9-4 lead before the set kicked into high gear. Tying the score up eight times during the set, the I95 rivals went point for point. A kill by rookie Jailyn Ivey followed by a VUU error, gave VSU a quick edge over the Panthers to bring the score to 24-21. Three consecutive errors on the Trojans tied the set 24-all. A quick Trojans timeout put VSU back in the game to collect two points for the 26-24 set and the overall win.

The victory moves VSU to a 3-10 overall record, 3-2 in the CIAA conference.

Returning to the court on September 30-October 1, the Trojans will host the CIAA Round Up 2 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
