ETTRICK, Va. (July 26, 2017) – Virginia State University's head volleyball coach Rose White has announced her 2017 signee class. This year's signees include three standouts from the DMV (Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia) area.
Middle blocker Ashanti Day (Winchester, Va.) and setter Victoria Holman (Stafford, Va.) join outside hitter Jailyn Ivey (Bowie, Md.) to round out the 2017 signing class.

"We're very excited about the three young ladies who will be joining our program next season," said Coach White. "They are a group of players that possess a very high volleyball IQ and I believe they will make the transition from high school and club to the college game fairly seamlessly. If I could use one word to describe each of them, it would be 'physical.' All three, are very aggressive, physical players, but they also have a high level of skill in their respective area of expertise."

Here's a breakdown of the newest additions to the Trojans Volleyball family, with comments from head coach Rose White.
 
Jailyn Ivey | 5-11 | OH | Bowie, Md.  

A native of Bowie, Maryland, Ivey is a 5-11 outside hitter who was named honorable mention All-District at Bowie High School in 2017. A four-time letter winner, Ivey helped her team to a state tournament during her senior season. She played her club seasons with the Chesapeake Elite Volleyball Academy out of Maryland.

White on Ivey: "Ivey is a strong hitter. She has a lot of physicality to her game and is someone who can help us a lot in the future with that physicality at the net. She can go up high and bang the ball. But Jailyn also has the other skills where she can play back row and pass at a very consistent level; she can play on the outside and she can play on the right side. We're excited to have her in the program and believe that she'll be someone who can go out and get kills for us."
 
 
 
Victoria Holman | 5-8 | S | Stafford, Va.  

Holman is a four-year starter from North Stafford High School. Victoria is a setter that is a dynamic player on the court that was one of the leaders for her high school team this past season. She made major contributions to the team throughout the season.

White on Holman: "Victoria is one of the most physical setters that I've seen in her class. She is a wiry, athletic young lady with great quickness and a nose for the ball. Her forte is digging and keeping the ball alive in transitions and that's something that will definitely help our team to extend rallies. We're excited to get Victoria in here and we believe she has the make-up to be one of players that can be placed on the list of players to watch for."

Day is a four-year starter from James Wood High School. A dynamic player on the court that was one of the leaders for her high school team this past season. She made major contributions to the team throughout the season. She played her club seasons with the Potomac Elite Volleyball Club out of West Virginia.

White on Day: "Ashanti is a young lady who has been very successful in her high school season playing at the middle blocker position. She is one of the top players who has some skills that go beyond playing in the middle. She can pass, she's a very good defender, and she's one of the best blockers that will be added to the great list of players that have come through the program coming straight out of high school. Ashanti will be able to affect our team in a positive manner from all six rotations and get kills for us out of all three hitting positions. She has some incredible skills that we are looking forward to getting in our gym."
