Women's Basketball Outlast the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s 70-58

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 14, 2017) – Virginia State University's women basketball rolled to a 70-54 victory over St. Augustine's tonight at Emery Gymnasium in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener. Senior guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, Va.) posted 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist to lead the way for the Trojans.
 
Virginia State shot 31.6 percent from the field, and 69.4 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Keyana Brown (Williamsburg, Va.) followed Fitts as VSU's second-leading scorer with 15 points, while forward Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) tallied 13 points and 11 total rebounds. Alexis Smith (Lusby, Md. Va.) also contributed 12 points, three assists, and three steals.
 
The Trojans set the tone early, fueling an 18-7 VSU lead to start the game.  Virginia State controlled the court with a 21-15 lead to close out the first quarter.
 
In the second stanza, Virginia State built their lead to 29-15 by the 5:18 mark, before the Falcons tried to mount a comeback and cut the lead to 33-19 with 2:10 to play in the half. The Trojans proceeded to hold SAU to three points for the remainder of the half to take a 14 point advantage into the break, 35-21.
 
With 3:36 to go in the third, two free throws by Chrisanna Green put the Trojans up, 49-40, and never turning over the lead the entire contest. SAU netted seven points in the final minutes of the quarter, cutting VSU's lead 54-47 heading into the final period.
 
The Trojans continued to increase their lead in the final quarter of the game. Virginia State added 16 points in the final period while holding St. Augustine's to 11 points to win the game, 70-58.

 

St. Augustine's University leading scorer was Kaaliya Williams, who finished the contest with 13 points, three total rebounds, and two assists.
 

Up Next: Virginia State will travel to face the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on Saturday, December 16. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
