Trojans Crush Cheyney University Wolves, 77-53

ETTRICK, Va. (November 25, 2017) - The Trojans of Virginia State University secured a 77-53 victory over the visiting Wolves of Cheyney University at home this afternoon. With the victory, the Trojans improve to a 5-0 overall record while Cheyney moves to a 1-5 record.

Senior guard Alexis Smith (Lusby, Md.) led the way for the Trojans posting a game high of 25 points, one rebound, eight assists and six steals.
 
Virginia State shot 43.8 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from behind the arc and had three players to score in double figures. Senior forward Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, NY) was VSU's second-leading scorer with 16 points and nine total rebounds, while guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, Va.) secured 13 points.


Smith set the tone early contributing five points and fueling an 11-2 lead to start the game. Virginia State opened up a 25-7 lead to close out the first quarter, while tying the game once in the contest.
 
In the second stanza, Virginia State built its lead to 31-11 by the 5:11 mark, continuing to dominate on the court. The Trojans proceeded to add points to the board for the remainder of the half while tallying four points to take a 12-point advantage into the break, 34-22.
 
With 6:29 to go in the third, a layup by Alexis Smith put Virginia State up, 41-24. Cheyney netted eight points in the remaining minutes of the quarter, cutting Virginia State's lead to 53-32, heading into the final period.
 
The Trojans added 24 points in the final period to win the game, 77-53. VSU led for 37:47 in the contest.
 
Cheyney's leading scorers were K'viah Breazeale (9), TaKayla Ellis (8) and Marlon Herring (8).
