Box Score Richmond, VA (October 16, 2017) - The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team took down the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University, 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20), in a road matchup tonight.

Staying consistent on the court was rookie Jailyn Ivey with 16 kills, followed by junior Hailey Heyward with 15 kills. Securing two aces each were rookie Victoria Holman, sophomore Jasmine Jones and junior Hailey Heyward. Junior Myia Jones tallied 3 blocks while senior Miranda Bass collected 39 assists.

VSU raked in 7 consecutive kills to take an 8-5 set one lead. A powerful kill by junior Hailey Heyward and an error by the Panthers, gave the Trojans a 12-7 lead at the first time out of the set. An assisted block by junior Myia Jones and rookie Victoria Holman, gave VSU a 17-8 lead over the home team. VSU grasped a 10 point lead, 19-9, after a Panthers net error. Going into the second time out of the set, the Trojans held a 20-9 lead. VSU would soon take the set, 25-15 after an error by VUU.

The Trojans worked to keep the ball alive to start set two. Holman secured an ace to give the Trojans a 5-4 lead over the Panthers. A solo block by Ivey tied the game, 8-8, followed by a Panthers rotation error to give VSU the 9-8 lead. At the first time out of the set, the Trojans trailed VUU, 13-10. A kill by Heyward got the Trojans back into a consistent rhythm to get within tying range of the Panthers. An error by the Panthers and a kill by Myia Jones gave the Trojans a 24-23 lead. VSU gained the set point after a VUU error.

A block by sophomore Kennedi Cannon tied the score 4-4 to begin set three. Keeping the game point for point, Ivey tied the game 8-8 with a kill and gave VSU the lead with a consecutive play. The Panthers soon jumped ahead with a strong lead to take the set 25-20.

A block by both teams tied the game 1-1 to start set four. A kill by Hailey Heyward tied the set, 6-6, as both teams worked to take the lead. A Panthers error gave the Trojans a 10-9 lead. An error by VUU tied the set, 15-15, at the first timeout of the set. The Trojans worked to rally back, taking a 19-16 lead. Point for point, the Trojans extended the scoring gap to take the set, 25-20.

The Trojans will have a few additional practice days before returning to action on Sunday, Â October 22. The 2pm road contest will be against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University.
