Box Score ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University men's basketball team clinched a 81 -77 win over Chowan University on February 10.
The win improves the Trojans to a 17-5 overall record on the season, 11-2 in the CIAA and leads the CIAA Northern Division.
The Trojans were offensively pioneered by junior guard
Kevin Williams (Franklinton, NC) recording a season high of 26 points. Freshman forward
Joseph Bradshaw (Silver Springs, MD) followed with 17 points and junior forward
Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) contributed 15 points. Moore also led the Trojans defensively recording 8 rebounds.
Both teams started the game equally matched, fighting to grasp the CIAA Northern Division spot. With 6:58 remaining in the first half the score was knotted up at 26.Back-to-back jump shots by Moore gave the Trojans a 4 point lead with under five minutes remaining in the opening half. However, the Hawks fought back and carried a 39 -33 lead over the Trojans into halftime.
VSU returned in the second half with a lively presence from behind the arc that was essential throughout the season. A deep three point shot by Williams with 13:49 remaining in the game cut the Hawks lead down to 2 points. Moments later Bradshaw scored in the paint to tie the game up at 48-48.
By the 10:54 mark the Trojans had matched the Hawks largest lead of the game and went up by 8 points.
With 7:19 remaining in the game the  Hawks manage to fight back and tie the game back up at 62. VSU didn't let up and in the final 30 seconds with the clock winding down, the Hawks resort to picking up quick fouls. VSU's trips to the line helped extend their 2 point lead into an 81-77 victory.
The Trojans will travel to Elizabeth City, NC to take on Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, February 13 at 4 PM.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
