Women’s Basketball Overthrows SAU, 79-45, in Conference Win

ETTRICK, Va.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team overthrew the Falcons of St. Augustine's University in a conference matchup . The December 18 contest ruled in favor of the Trojan with a final score of 79-45.

VSU advanced to a 9-2 overall record, 2-0 in the conference while the Falcons move to a 3-11 overall record.

Taking the helm of the contest for VSU was senior Nandi Taylor with 22 points. Senior Taylor Daniels and junior Mia Fitts where equally matched on the court, both earning 13 points. Junior Endia McKinney chipped in, tallying 8 rebounds for the Trojans.

SAU took a short lived lead after their game opening jumper. The Trojans would soon step in to dominate the court. Daniels secured a layup with 3:20 left in the first quarter to send VSU on a steady run. Holding a 12 point lead, VSU finished the first quarter with a score of 23-11.

The Trojans showed no mercy for the Falcons for the remainder of the game. Fitts gave the Trojans their first 9 points of the second quarter. VSU held the Falcons under 20 points, going into the halftime with a score of 42-19.

Bucket after bucket, VSU extended the scoring gap. Rounding out the third quarter, the Trojans gained their largest game lead with 44 points.  

SAU attempted to get back in the game in the final minutes of regulation, but VSU was able to hold strong to a 34 point lead and the win.

The Trojans had an edge over the Falcons in all areas. They dominated in points off turnovers (22-10), second chance points (2-9), bench points, (27-17), points in the paint (42-8) and fast break points (16-0).

VSU ended the night shooting 58.8 percent (30-51) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-14) from behind the arc, and 66.7 percent (14-21) at the line, while SAU ended the night shooting 25.5 percent (12-47) from the field, 13.3 percent (2-15) from behind the arc, and 90.5 percent (19-21) at the line.

The Trojans will take on the Lady Rams of Shepherd University on Friday, December 30.  Tip-off is set for 5:30pm in Shepherd, WV.

VSU will continue to work hard to prepare for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament on February 20-25 in Charlotte. NC.
