Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- After a 8 game winning streak and an unblemished CIAA Northern Division record, the VSU Trojans suffered a loss to the Chowan University Hawks on February 11, with a final score of 57-52.
VSU shot 31.4 percent (16-51) in field goals, 26.3 percent (5-19) from behind the arc, and 65.2 percent (15-23) from the free throw line.
Senior
Alphonso Leary and sophomore Elijah More both lead the Trojans with 12 points each. Chowan's Kyree Bethel led the game in scoring with 20 points. Leary secured a team high of 9 rebounds while Chowan's Josh Mellete also collected a team high of 9 rebounds.
The Trojans worked to stay consistent at the beginning of the first half with a tied score of 11-11 after a dunk from senior
Tyrece Little. Chowan pulled away with 6:48 left in the half with a score of 21-11. Although, senior
Lamar Kearse secured a shot from behind the arc with 40 seconds left until half time, the Trojans would still fall short, 31-19.
Sophomore
Jamison Jeffers gave VSU some momentum with a clean 3 point shot at 14:59 with a close score of 34-31, Trojans trailing. The men continued to fight until the end with a 3 pointer at the 4 second mark by senior
Xavier Parham. At the end of regulation, the Trojans suffered a 57-52 loss to the Hawks.
The Trojans will Orange out Daniel Gymnasium on Saturday, February 14 for the Alumni/ Go Red televised game against the Elizabeth City State University Vikings. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
