Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fl. – The VSU Trojans men's basketball fell short of a win,116-93, in day 2 of the tournament host, the Embry-Riddle University.
The loss moves the Trojans to an 8-3 overall record, while Embry-Riddle advances to a 8-1 record.
VSU shot 42.2 percent (35-83) from the field, 25.9 percent (7-27) from behind the arc and 69.6 percent (16-23) from the free throw line.
Junior and All-CIAA Preseason pick Elijah Moore (Yorktown, VA) led the Trojan for the second day of the tournament with 28 points. Moore also led the team in recoveries, jumping up for 6 rebounds. Rookie Walter Williams (Richmond, VA) chipped in 15 points while rookie Cyonte Melvin (Hampton, VA) rounded out the double digit scoring for the Trojans with 13 points.
The Trojans secured the first 3 baskets of the game with 2 free throws by Moore and a good shot from behind the arc by Williams. The Eagles answered back to begin the back and forth battle for the lead. With 16:12 on the clock, Embry-Riddle pulled away and never looked back. VSU trailed going into halftime with a score of 59-41.
Attempting to bounce back in the second half, the Trojans maneuvered down the court but was unsuccessful. At the end of game, VSU fell short of a win with a final score of 116-93.
The Trojans will begin play in 2016 on Thursday, January 7 again the Winston-Salem State University Rams for VSU's Faculty/ Staff Appreciation Day. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Daniel Gymnasium.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
