Box Score RALEIGH, NC – The VSU Trojans women's basketball team overpowered the Lady Falcons of St. Augustine's University, with a final score of 75-48, in their first CIAA conference game of the season on December 15.
The victory moves the Trojans to a 4-5 overall record, 1-0 in the conference while the Lady Falcons fall to a 3-8 overall record, 0-1 in the conference.
VSU rounded out the night shooting 43.5 percent (30-69) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-16) from behind the arc and 53.3 percent (8-15) from the free throw line.
Senior and CIAA Preseason pick
Wynterra Pittman (Graceville, FL) took the helm of the game, securing 18 points and 9 rebounds for the Trojans. Junior newcomer
Donae' Moguel (Los Angeles, CA) add 12 points and 8 rebounds to the books while junior
Nandi Taylor (Mt. Morris, MI) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
VSU had a slow run in the first quarter as the Lady Falcons took an 18-14. The Trojans bounced back in the second quarter after junior
Joy Hickman (Wilmington DE) landed a shot from behind the arc, bring the score to 20-18. There was no turning back, as the Trojans expanded the scoring game to 40-28 at halftime.
Pittman and junior Dominique Hagins (Washington, DC) were equally matched in the third quarter, as they each obtained 6 points to stretch the score to 54-39. The Trojans collectively worked together in the fourth quarter to secure a 75-48 victory in their first conference game of the season.
VSU secured their win by outscoring SAU in points off of turnovers, 2
nd chance points, bench points, and baskets in the paint.
The Trojans will be taking the court on Thursday, December 17 in Fayetteville, NC to face the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
