Box Score CHEYNEY, Pa.- The Virginia State University women's basketball team took a 51-48 loss to the Cheyney University Lady Wolves on December 11.
The fall moves the Trojans to a 2-5 overall record and gives Cheyney their first win of the season with a 1-7 overall record.
VSU shot 34.0 percent (18-53) from the field, 25.0 percent (3-12) from behind the arc, and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the line.
Senior Wynterra Piittman (Graceville, FL) and junior
Domonique Hagins (Washington, DC) were equally matched, leading the Trojans with 9 points each. Pittman jumped up for VSU record a team high of 10 rebounds.
VSU took charge of the game early in the 1
st quarter, leading the Lady Wolves by as much as 8 points. Cheyney caught back up and remained equally matched with the Trojans through halftime. VSU trailed at the end of the first half with a score of 23-22.
A layup by Hagins at the beginning of the 3
rd quarter gave VSU their last lead of the game with a score of 24-23. After a foul shot by the Lady Wolves to tie the game 24-24 followed by a three pointer, the Trojan could not answer back to take the lead. Although the game was tied 3 times in the 4
th quarter, VSU fell short of a win with a final score of 51-48.
The Trojans will be back in actions on Sunday, December 13 in Daniel Gymnasium to take on the Washington Adventist Lady Shock at 3:30 p.m.
The Virginia State Department of Athletics annual 1,000 cans, 1 goal campaign initiative is underway. The canned food items collected will be donated to the local food banks. The Department encourages all fans, alumni, faculty and friends to bring a canned food item to all of the home basketball games this season.
