Box Score ETTRICK, Va. – The VSU men's basketball team maintain their CIAA Northern Division first place ranking after defeating the Chowan University Hawks, 88-70, on January 21 in Daniel Gymnasium.
VSU shot 50.0 percent (23-46) from the field, 50.0 percent (5-10) from behind the arc and 72.7 percent (37-47) from the free throw line.
Taking the reins of the game for the Trojans was sophomore
Elijah Moore with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Senior
Tyrece Little captured his second double-double of the week (fifth for the season) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie
Tyler Peterson came through for the Trojans securing 11 points for the night.
Little gave a crowd pleasing dunk early in the first half, giving the Trojans momentum to defend their home court. Basket after basket, VSU created a growing scoring gap locking in their lead. Moore gave the Trojans two consecutive shots from behind the arc, giving the Trojans a 10 point lead with 7:37 on the clock. The Hawks did not stand a chance in the first half; trail the Trojans 44-33 at halftime.
The second half started with Little setting the tone with another great dunk. The Trojans continued to bury the Hawks in baskets with a 20 point lead with 5:57 left in regulation. By the end of the game, Chowan was defeated by 18 points. The final score was 88-70.
VSU will travel to face thier CIAA northern division opponent Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, January 24. Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
