Lamar Kearse scored a season and game-high 24 points, as the Virginia State University Men's basketball team captured its first victory on the season, Saturday evening in Daniel Gymnasium over UVA-Wise, 92-56.
With the victory, the Trojans improves to 1-1 on the season; while the Cavaliers drop to 1-1.
VSU finished the game shooting 53.8 percent from the field, 45.8 percent from beyond the arch, and 64.7 percent from the line.
UVA-Wise finished the game shooting 25 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent from behind the arch, and 67.9 percent from the charity stripe.
The Trojans jumped out to 26-11 lead at the 9:45 mark in the first half and never looked back, closing out the half with a 49-23 lead. VSU shot 58.8 percent from the field, making 20-of its-34 points; while shooting 57.1 percent from behind the arch and 50 percent from the line.
Kearse was scorching hot in the half, shooting 100 percent from behind the arch (5-for-5) and 6-of-8 from the field. He also added four rebounds in the half.
Virginia State held the Cavaliers to a low 24 percent (6-of-25) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from behind the arch, and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the candy stripe.
Kearse led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of 11 shooting from the floor and 6-for-6 from beyond the arch. Kenneth Pankey added eleven points; while
Jamison Jeffers and
Troy Locke rounded out all scoring with 10 points each.
Charles George led the Cavaliers with 17 points; while Matt Day added 10 in the effort.
The Trojans travel to Mount Olive, N.C. to face Mount Olive University in Kornegay Gymnasium for the 2014 UMO Pickle Classic hosted by Mount Olive Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
