Charleston Takes Down Trojans Softball in Double Header Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By: Reshawn Garnett, VSU Sports Information Intern
The Virginia State Trojans drop both games on Friday, March 15th to University of Charleston. VSU fell 7-4 in game one and took a 9-5 loss in game two. The Trojans offense was productive in both games however defense proved to be the difference.

A fourth inning rally, in game one kept the Trojans within striking distance after a slow start in the opening three innings. Inez Hudson pitched all seven innings for the Trojans in game one. She gave 15 hits and seven runs in the Trojans 7-4 loss in part one of a double header.

Jameshia Smith was a beacon of light in a somewhat dismal first half of soft ball for the VSU Trojans. Smith was the first Trojan to reach base and batted in a one run homer, in an effort to keep the Trojans in the game. However, Tierra Pendergrass was responsible for the Trojans first notch on the score board prior to the homer by Smith. The score was 6-2 after three innings of play. The Trojans began to rally at the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases. It was up to pitcher Inez Hudson to bring some Trojans home and she did. The Pitcher earned herself an RBI bringing home Mikia Nobel, (7-3). One more Trojan would score tightening the game to 7-4.

The Trojans defense would hold the Golden Eagles scoreless for two more innings. However the damage was already done. The Trojans couldn't recover after seven innings of play, losing 7-4 in game one.

A big fifth inning lifted the Golden Eagles over the Trojans 9-5 in game two.  The Trojans defense made significant improvements. VSU hustled for fly balls and ground balls. Jessica Mattia was the leading lady for the Trojans. She opened the game with one heck of a pitching performance. Mattia sat down four batters after seven innings. The Trojans offense on the other hand got off to a slow start.

VSU was held hitless in the first three innings. Jameshia Smith was the first to break the ice in the fourth inning of play. Smith floated the ball safely to center field igniting a Trojan rally.  The Trojans recorded two consecutive hits to load the bases. Jameshia scored VSU's first run on a wild pitch closing the gap (2-1). Mikia Noble tied the game 2-2 and earned herself an RBI following the desolate pitch, bringing Sade Holmes in for the score. Unfortunately, The Trojans would allow a barrage of scoring in the ensuing inning. The Golden Eagles tacked on three more runs equaling a 6-2 advantage. The Trojans countered with two runs in an effort to keep hope alive.

Jameshia Smith hit a line drive to left field bringing Cameryn Smith home (6-3). Smith was later batted in by LaCara Hawkes, closing the gap to just 6-4 at the bottom of the fifth.   The Trojans escaped the top of the sixth inning with the score 7-4 after giving up a run.

However a two runs in the seventh inning sealed the Trojans fate, 9-5.
