Virginia State University's bench dominated the game with 31 points, led by
James Vann's 17 points as the Trojans defeated the Hawks of Chowan University 74-64 in Murfreesboro, NC on Wednesday, February 13
th.
James Vann nailed 5 of 10 shots from three-point range finishing with a team-high 17 points. He scored 11 points in the first half of play as the Trojans shot 47% from the field. Both
Mike Bynum and
Kenny Mitchell each had seven points in the first half for Virginia State carrying the Trojans to a 38-31 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Trojans went a perfect 12-12 from the free-throw line.
John Holleman hit all four of his attempts while
Mike Bynum and
Kenny Mitchell nailed three each. DeVonte Williams paced the Trojans with four assists in the second half with VSU shooting 38% from the field. Defensively, the Trojans forced eight turnovers in the second half and were able to hold on for a 74-64 road win against Chowan.
The Trojans bench outscored the Hawks 31-9.
James Vann was 6-12 from the field and had four rebounds.
Kenny Mitchell and
Mike Bynum also hit double-figure scoring with 16 and 15 points respectively.
Kenny Mitchell recorded his third double-double of the season adding 10 rebounds.
VSU improved to 12-11 overall with a 4-3 CIAA Northern Divisional record. The Trojans return home on Saturday, February 16
th against the Vikings of Elizabeth City State at 7:30 p.m.
