The Virginia State Trojans faced the Newport News Apprentice School Builders in a crowd of over 2,500 on Dec. 4. Both teams started with a strong foundation the first 5 minutes of the game with the score of 5-3. Within minutes the Trojans jumped ahead with a score of 12-3 with jumpers from
Amiel Terry and
Kevin Wiggins and a three pointer from
Allen Harris. With six minutes left in the first half, the Builder came back with a vengeance tying the score 18-18. Although the men continued to score, several fouls against the Trojans gave the Builders the advantage to make free throw shots and end the first half in the lead with a score of 26-31. First half recap, the Trojans had a field goal percent of 39.3, a three point percent of 44.4 and a free throw percent of 0 while the Builders had a field goal percent of 37.5, a three point percent of 33.3 and a free throw percent of 75.

At the top of the second half the Builders continued to lead until the Trojans tied the game, 40-40, with 15 minutes on the clock. The Builders were up by two before
Lamar Kearse tied the game 48-48 with 12:28 on the clock. Harris came back in the game with 7:55 left on the clock and hit four three point shots giving the Trojan a score of 75-59. To close the game out,
Kahlil Tate and
James Vann went to the line and were 2-2 with foul shots. The final score was 79-59, giving the Trojans a 7-1 record.

Trojan team highs for the night were Harris with 22 points and six rebounds while Kearse had 19 points and three rebounds.

The Trojans will take on the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4:00pm in Daniel Gymnasium.
