Lamesha Deal registered a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Da'Shae Jones scored 18 points and Tiffanie Adair added 16, as Virginia State downed Cheyney, 72-58, in women's basketball action. The win was the fourth consecutive for Virginia State (4-0) and marked the season-opener for Cheyney (0-1).
The Trojans held the lead throughout the opening half but led by just two, 25-23, late in the first half. Virginia State outscored the Lady Wolves, 9-4, over the final 3:41 to build a 34-26 halftime advantage. The lead increased to 15 in the early minutes of the second half and grew to as many of 16, 57-41, midway through the second half. Cheyney could get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Cheyney had a trio of players in double figures led by Amber Genwright's 13 points. Kyra Hines-Allen and Kia Whitley-Duncan chipped in 11 points apiece. Kiana Jackson led Cheyney with 10 rebounds.
The Trojans play at Washington Adventist on Monday, Nov, 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Trojans return home to host Salem International on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
