This past weekend the Virginia State University Track & Field team travelled north to open their 2013 indoor season at the NYU Gotham Invite and the NYYRRC Collegiate Invite on January 11th and 12th; both held at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York, NY.
The Trojans had two solid days of competition. The men's and women's teams had many PR's (personal records) and some solid season-opener performances.
Most notably, there was a school record set, two of the fastest times in the nation were ran and there were a total of five males and two females who posted NCAA Qualifying marks during competition:
Samantha Edwards: 400m - 54.58 (fastest time in the Nation - NCAA Division II) Automatic Qualifier.
Samantha Edwards: 500m 1:11.72 (fastest time in the Nation - ALL Divisions: I II III) and NEW School Record.
Ayana Baylor: 60m 7.77 (NCAA Provo qualifier)
Men's 4x400m:
Te'Shad Chambers,
Daniel Ross,
Kenja Hanniford,
Clive Cameron - 3:18.32 (NCAA Qualifier 10th in the Nation)
Men's 4x400m:
Te'Shad Chambers,
Daniel Ross,
Clive Cameron, and
Prince Owusu-Mensah 3:17.55 (NCAA Qualifier - 7th in the Nation.)
According to Head Coach Jason-Lamont Jackson " It's gonna be a long season, but this was a big step in the right direction for our program. 7 NCAA qualifiers in our first competition; I couldn't be happier for this type of start. Our student-athletes battled some extremely tough schools and represented what we've been working for since the Fall. We are excited about the weekend and looking forward to the next few meets. I'll say it everyday.... it's a GREAT Day to be a Trojan!"
