Defense Leads Trojans Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 86-62

The Trojans held St. Thomas Aquinas to 35% shooting from the field, while having four scorers in double-digits in an 86-62 win on Saturday, December 29th in Petersburg, VA. Kenny Mitchell led VSU with 21 points including a perfect 3-3 from three-point land.

Virginia State University exploded for a season-high 86 points in a 24-point win over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas. The Trojans made 8 three-point field goals and dished out 24 assists, both were season-highs. VSU led the entire way shooting 50% from the field and converted on 14-17 free-throws. The Spartans trailed the Trojans 43-25 at the half behind Kenny Mitchell's 16 first half points and Allen Harris' 13 points. Christopher Grier poured in 14 points in the second half while Alex Jackson snagged seven rebounds pacing VSU to their fifth win of the season.

Kenny Mitchell tied his season-high of 21 points shooting 9-14 from the field.  Allen Harris followed with 17 points, while Christopher Grier added 14 points, and Mike Bynum had 11 points. Alex Jackson led the Trojans with nine rebounds and Mike Bynum dished out a team-high seven assists.

With a 5-4 overall record the Trojans will begin CIAA conference play on Thursday, January 3rd at 7:30 p.m. against St. Augustine's University in Daniel Gymnasium.
