Three Trojans hit double-figures in their first win of the season in a 73-54 win over the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg.
Shawn Porter scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Virginia State University hosted their 5
th Annual Chik-Fil-A Classic in Daniel Gymnasium.
In the first half, VSU shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field.
Kenny Mitchell (Sr./ Atlanta, GA) led the Trojans in the first half scoring 12 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. Mitchell along with
Shawn Porter (So./Chesapeake, VA) both had four rebounds in the half as the Trojans outrebounded the Dragons 22-19. The Trojans played great defensively holding the Dragons to 30% shooting in the first half. Virginia State went into halftime ahead 31-24.
The Trojans turned up the defensive pressure in the second half forcing the Dragons into 13 turnovers. VSU's
Shawn Porter and
Mike Bynum both had nine points each in the second half carrying the Trojans to their first victory of the season. VSU held Virginia-Lynchburg to 36% shooting from the field and outscored the Dragons in the second half 42-30.
“I try to do the little things to help my team win,” states VSU's
Shawn Porter. “The dirty work makes the biggest difference in my opinion, which is why I am so willing to do it,” he added.
Kenny Mitchell also led the team in scoring with 17 points. Solid play in all aspects of the game allowed the Trojans to gradually build a 20 point cushion over the Dragons. The Trojans ended up dominating the Dragons and winning in a very convincing fashion. “We picked up the intensity, shot the ball better, and made the proper adjustments,” commented VSU Head Coach Darryl Jacobs about the Trojans victory. The Trojans will host Florida Memorial University on the final day of the Chik-Fil-A Classic on Saturday, Nov. 24
th at 8:30 pm.
