VSU Men's Basketball team opened their 2012-13 season against Fairmont State in front of a packed crowd in Daniel Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 23
rd. The Trojans lost 72-55 after shooting 32% from the field.
The first game jitters got the best of the Trojans in the first couple of minutes, being victims of a lot of turnovers mainly traveling violations. Despite the slow start and the under average field goal percentage of 34.8%, the Trojans were able to keep the game close with stellar defense. The Trojans forced Fairmont State to turn the ball over 8 times, which helped them to face a six point halftime deficit, 23-29.
Key players after one half of play goes to newcomer
Christopher Grier (Jr./ Stone Mountain, GA), who scored 6pts on 2-4 shooting from the field, and the anchor in the middle big man
Kenny Mitchell (Sr./ Atlanta, GA), had 7pts on 2-4 shooting from the field.
Just like the first half the Trojans started the second half off slow. In addition, the team made careless mistakes with the basketball, which ultimately prevented the team chances of pulling off the victory. Offensively the team was never in a groove shooting. As a result, the Trojans fell in a hard fought game 55-72.
Christopher Grier was the leading scorer for the Trojans with 18pts (5-11 FG) and 4 rebounds.
Kenny Mitchell chipped in with 16pts (4-10 FG) and 8 rebounds, and Khalil Tate (Jr./ Washington, DC) chipped in coming off the bench scoring 10pts.
