Virginia State University's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-13) win over Lincoln University on Thursday, October 25th in Daniel Gymnasium in Ettrick, VA. Jenessa Shinauld (So./ Sacramento, CA) led VSU defensively with 21 digs, while Jasmine Henderson (Jr./ St. Louis, MO) had 31 assists.

The Lady Trojans opened up the first set in dominating fashion with an onslaught of punishing attacks.  VSU had 11 kills with only one error, while Lincoln had 12 errors and two kills in the first set. Virginia State ran away with the win in the first set, 25- 5.

In the second set the teams went back forth and there were several lead changes midway through the period.   With the score 14-12 in favor of Virginia State, the Lady Trojans grabbed the momentum and gradually began to pull away, behind the offense of Whitley Bradley (R-So./ Cibilo, TX). Several errors by Lincoln made it easy for the Lady Trojans to win 25-15. VSU matched their total kills from the first set with 11 kills in the second set.

From the opening moment of the third set it was evident that the Lady Trojans were gunning for the straight-set sweep over the visiting Lady Lions.  VSU opened up the third set with great teamwork. VSU recorded a game-high 14 kills in the final set, cruising to a 25-13 win over their CIAA Northern Divisional opponent.

“It wasn't our best game, but I was happy with our performance as a team.  The important part was that we finished the game strong,” stated VSU head volleyball coach Ivana Rich.

VSU's Whitley Bradley led her team with 10 kills. Jasmine Henderson had a game-high 31 assists and scored three service aces. Jenessa Shinauld anchored the defense with 21 digs.

The Lady Trojans improve to 12-8 overall, with a 11-2 CIAA conference record. With five games remaining in the regular season, the Lady Trojans have their best win record since 2004 when the Lady Trojans finished with a 20-10 record. VSU travels to Murfreesboro, NC on October 29th to go against the CIAA Northern Divisional leaders Chowan Hawks.
