Defensive effort leads Virginia State past Lincoln (PA) 76-60

BALTIMORE, MD --The Virginia State men's basketball team kept Lincoln (PA) to just 27.4 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 76-60 victory against the Lions at CFG Bank Arena Wednesday.

The Trojans (20-9) had four players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. William Hopkins added 15 points and two steals and Tim Uzochuwku chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals.

Led by Jared White's four offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.

Virginia State did a stellar job disrupting Lincoln (PA) shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Davian Coleman's four rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

After falling behind 27-23, Virginia State went on a 12-0 run with 7:37 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Cooper, to take a 35-27 lead. The Trojans then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 39-31 advantage. Virginia State capitalized on seven Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Virginia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 49-40 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 56-40 with 11:39 to go in the contest. The Trojans held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 76-60 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 37 points in the lane.
