PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team kept Virginia Union to just 18.2 percent from deep in a 4-for-22 shooting performance on the way to a 73-59 win against the Panthers at home Saturday.
The Trojans (19-9, 12-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Tim Uzochuwku, who had 19 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Jared Clawson added 12 points and Davian Coleman helped out with a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Virginia State shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 24 made field goals. Jacob Cooper's seven assists led the Trojans.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Virginia Union shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Coleman's two rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 21-17 advantage, Virginia State went on a 9-0 run with 10:03 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Amare Wimbush, to increase its lead to 30-17. The Trojans then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 34-26 advantage. Virginia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 34 points close to the basket.
Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 71-56 with 47 seconds to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-59 win. Virginia State got out on the break in the period, scoring 10 fast break points.
